SUMMARY:Charterhouse Almshouse Tour
DESCRIPTION:In 1371 the Charterhouse was built as a Carthusian Monastery. Sacked and plundered by Henry Vlll, it was given to one of his henchman who converted it to one of the great courtyard houses of Tudor London. It was subsequently sold to Thomas Sutton who converted it to a school for the young and an almshouse for the old. While the school has moved to Godalming, the almshouses remain.\nThe almshouse offers a home and care for single people who are over 60 years old, who are in straightened circumstances but capable of living independently.\nOn this tour discover life at the almshouse today in these historic surroundings, including the great Hall where the residents sit together to eat their meals.\nINDEPENDENT TRAVEL REQUIRED.\n£19 per person. \n20 spaces.
