SUMMARY:Surrey on Film in the Kirby Library
DESCRIPTION:The Kirby Library will become a cinema for the morning as we watch a documentary film footage of various locations in Surrey between 1914 – 1953.  Surrey on Film is a fascinating compilation which draws on films from the Screen Archive South East collection. The edited compilation traces community life in the county from peacetime through the trauma of two World Wars and closes with the Coronation celebrations of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953.\nAmong the films included are clips from: a parade in Godalming in 1913 (one of the earliest surviving films of a Surrey town); women war workers in Shackleford during the First World War; Reigate Borough Carnival (1926); Empire Day at the Southern Railway Servant’s Orphanage, Woking (1933); George V Silver Jubilee celebrations in Walton on Thames and Hersham (1935); The Emberton Family of Chobham in 1936 and 1938; Walton’s March for Victory (1941); The Surrey Coronation Fete (30 May 1953), Surrey Land Club (c.1942); The Gowlland Family of Croydon (1944-1945); Leatherhead and District Civil Defence (c.1946); and Horley Cricket Club Coronation Fete (1953).\nThe Leatherhead Institute itself was opened on 14th February 1893 which is why we chose the same date for this screening of ‘Surrey on Film’. Refreshments will be served from 10.30am for an 11am start. The film lasts one hour.\n£5 per person – including refreshments\nSpace is limited to 20 people due to the cosy size of the room.
