Art History Lecture- Pre Raphaelites

by Anne Anderson

The Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, a group of seven young enthusiastic artists who number John Everett Millais, William Holman Hunt and Dante Gabriel Rossetti, were determined to overthrow artistic conventions through their painting and writing as well as to defy social conventions; they frequently became emotionally involved with their models and muses. Following the precepts of philosopher John Ruskin, they were determined to ‘go to nature, selecting nothing and rejecting nothing.’ Their chosen name, Pre-Raphaelites, reflects their preference for the art ‘before Raphael.’ Although only lasting from 1848 to 1853, the legacy of the Brotherhood was profound, shaping British art through three generations up to the First World War.
