Lovers and Beekeepers: What’s in a Valentine- Art History with a Difference
By Jessica Saraga
In recognition of the date of this lecture, we will be looking at art that is associated with Valentines, and some well-known artists with Valentine in their name. The lecture will also include some linked but less obvious subjects, as although love and lovers have been a huge inspiration in Western art, associations with St Valentine cover far more than that. His name comes from the Latin word for strength. He is also known in Christian theology as the patron saint of beekeepers, and of people suffering seizures. So despite love being said to conquer all, in this lecture it will feature as just one of many Valentine related subjects.
