Art History With a Difference – Empowered or Imprisoned? Women in Portraiture. Tammy Ellis

This lecture will consider portraits of women by artists as diverse as Da Vinci, Singer, Sargent, Mary Cassatt and Picasso as well as self-portraits by women artists. We will then consider whether these portraits have ‘empowered’ the sitters or whether the images created are both problematic and negative as far as the subjects are concerned thereby ‘imprisoning’ them.
