Vienna 1900: Sex, Death and Design Part 1- Art History with a Difference

By Ronnie Ireland

Vienna around 1900 was a city of huge contrasts – wealth and poverty; new thinking and conservatism; freedom and prejudice. In this atmosphere, a very different art and design developed – more concerned with emotion, psychology and how we live than the formal aesthetic concerns of the School of Paris. An idea of the “Gesamtkunstwerk” grew, the total art work, a belief that the dissemination of the best art and design could make a better society. We look at this fascinating city and its arts from c1880 – 1920.
